Macraes Wetland & Heritage Walkway

Allow approximately 30 minutes.

Macraes Flat holds wetlands that make up the headwaters of the North branch of the Waikouaiti River. These wetlands provide important feeding and breeding habitiat for a range of insects and birds. This 13 hectare area has been protected and developed by GRD Macraes LTD as part of the Macraes Wetland Heritage Walkway and is part of the Macraes Heritage and Art Park. Take the time to follow the track and boardwalk and learn about the plants, insect, birds and history that make this wetland special.

A prominent feature of the wet land walk is the Haast Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) Sculture, a 750kg stainless steel sculpture created by Arrowtown sculptor Mark Hill.  The Haast’s eagle is understood to have lived in the South Island, including near Macraes. It became extinct more than 500 years ago. The bird is known to have attacked and eaten moa. It weighed up to 15kg and had a wingspan of up to 3m. The sculpture is 7m wide and has a wingspan of 12m.
